Why pray?

I'm trying to understand the reason for prayer in Christianity.  To my understanding, when you pray God will answer in one of three ways: he will grant the prayer, he will not grant the prayer, or he will wait or hold until a later time to make a decision.

God is all knowing and has a plan for each one of his children, so I am told through sunday school.  IF that is in fact the case, why pray?  It seems that God has already decided your fate and path long ago.  Why would he grant miracles that in there very nature, differ from reality and its infinite cause and effect process?  Or more simply, why pray if the creator rigged the game from the beginning??

WHY NOT PRAY?
ASK AND IT SHALL BE GIVEN TO YOU, but not as you expect it often to.

I see it as a waste of time either way. Instead of asking imaginary friends to help you out, I say you should take the initiative and make good things happen for you and others.
