Are the streets of Heaven Made of Gold?

Revelation speaks of Heaven in a way that I don't understand.
For example, the statement that the streets of Heaven will be made of gold doesn't make sense to me.

Why? If wordly possessions do not matter, why would it matter what the streets are made out of?

It sounds as though the author of Revelations was trying to promote a new night club or something. Doesn't this completely negate the reasoning from Luke:

'Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions...."

Indeed, why would it matter what the streets are made of?

The purest gold is good in heaven only for pavement.

Gotcha.

So do you think its metaphoric? Or will the streets of heaven actually be gold?

Hi Christy,

That is actually a good question, because I am not sure what the actual answer is. I think it possible it is metaphoric - however, on the other hand, I believe heaven is a physical place, just as real (more real) than the planet we live on right now, and the streets have to be made of SOMETHING, so I see no reason why they could not be gold.

The peculiar thing about it though is that the gold is said to be so pure that it is clear, like glass. I never heard of any stores there, though, so nobody will be stealing it. I suppose it's as good as anything else for pavement.

Doesn't seem like it would be the best pavement.... traction wise.

I had not thought of that - never been around enough to try it out.

Will there be cars? Why do you need pavement? For those who weren't good enough to get wings to walk on?

Hi Christy,

I have not read of any cars. I suppose the pavement prevents dust clouds.

I don't think anyone gets wings. I don't recall any human receiving wings. Christians are resurrected in a body like the Lord's and He is never mentioned as having wings.

So you have to walk everywhere... that sounds lame. Can you invent things in Heaven?

Think Henry Ford went to Heaven?

Hi Christy,

I believe we will continue to grow in knowledge in heaven. Why not invent things?

The best I understand Scripture, Christ travelled by thought after His resurrection. He appears to have desired to be somewhere and He was there. I figure we will do the same. It's the only way I know of to travel vast distances faster than light, which takes far too long.

But I love to walk. That would work fine in the celestial city, but to travel in the universe, my belief is thought is much faster than any conceivable mode.

Did Henry Ford trust Christ as his Lord and Saviour? If he did, he's in heaven. If he did not, he is not.

.... If we are allowed to invent things.... then isn't it conceivable that we would pollute heaven as we have earth?

... and given enough amount of time, destroy it?

We are afterall, only human. Just because we are in heaven doesn't mean we are perfect all of the sudden?

It means exactly that.  In the resurrection, those in heaven have the presence of sin removed from them.  The "ability" to sin, if you please, is totally removed.

Then your free will would have to be removed also. It would have to take away your option to sin.

you can be born again through jesus while you are on earth.... but that doesn't mean you will never sin again.

And even if that were true, humans are capable of blowing things up without sinning :)

The person's free will shall TRULY be free - free from any inclination to sin.  I will tell you more, briefly, later, but right now I have an errand and I must depart.
