A seance is an attempt to communicate with spirits, like on the movie The Craft. Spiritualists and Spiritists practice this art still today. They prefer the term "receiving messages". At the height of the churches popularity (Spiritualism), Mary Todd Lincoln performed a series of seances in The White House with several prominent members of society, including her husband, President Abraham Lincoln.

Its interesting how social taboos change from generation to generation. In the late 1800's, people could gather around in a circle and attempt to communicate with the dead, just like the President. Now, well, you still can, but it's definitely looked down upon as satanic and mumbo jumbo witchcraft and, well, just plain wierd and creepy.
