What do people usually give up when they fast for Lent?  Do they cut some food, like meat, from their diet for a while? Or do they starve themselves while the sun is up? Any out there practice fasting for religious reasons?

I don't do Lent.  I'm not a Catholic.

Fasting and giving up something for Lent are two different things. Catholics fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Jesus fasted, we do too.

Fasting is doing without the amount of food that you would normally eat. The Catholic fast used to be a strict no food the whole day. It has been eased so that now we're allowed to eat one meal plus two smaller meals (snacks) during the day.

Muslims do a strict fast during the month of Ramadan. From sunup to sundown no food passes their lips. However, after the sun has set, there are no restrictions. So for many, Ramadan is a month of fasting during the  day but partying at night.
