There are several branches of "Baptists". Two worth noting are the Southern Baptist Convention and the Independent Baptists. John R. Rice was a well-known leader of the latter and W. A. Criswell of the former.

The SBC has long been considered a little too liberal for the Independents, but thankfully they have become more conservative lately.
