Basicially, they slaugther 250,000+ buffalo and other various animals in honor of the Hindu goddess Gadhimai, goddess of power. This festival of carnage happens every five years and lasts for a whole month.
"It is the traditional way, " explained 45-year old Manoj Shah, a Nepali driver who has been attending the event since he was six, "If we want anything, and we come here with an offering to the goddess, within five years all our dreams will be fulfilled."
Apparently, even though there has been constant protest over the event, the government does not step in. They actually fund the event, claiming that its been going on for centuries and its tradition.
Really, this actually happens. I was a little shocked coming across this article. Any other mass slaughters happening around the world? I know I could google it, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of one themselves. Have you ever been to one or know of someone who has? Whats it like, horrific or religious?

I'd like to play Devil's advocate here.
While it may seem barbaric, it seems like the government takes steps to make sure the meat is sold so it does not go to waste, and then uses the profits to make improvements to the city.
It doesn't seem too different from a Jewish or Muslim butcher who blesses meat before it is slaughtered, its just on a much larger scale.
