http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/highschoolsports/2011190689_state1b26.html The first Jewish girls basketball team to make it to the Washington state championship decided to bow out because the game was scheduled during the Fast of Esther. The fast doesn't prohibit the girl's from playing, but it does state that they are not allowed to eat or drink until after nightfall. Instead of risking the possible dehydration that could come from playing without any water for the day, the team decided to withdrawal. The school did request that the game be rescheduled, but the request was denied due to the impact it would have on the other teams in the tournament. Do you think that the team was right in their withdrawal? Should the game of been rescheduled due to the conflict the holiday presented? At a minimum I would say that the event highlighted a favoritism towards certain religions that is present throughout many organizations and even schools in the United States. I have a hard time believing that a state championship basketball tournament would ever be scheduled on Christmas day, or even on Easter for that matter.
