For one thing it's a religion that has no God. When they asked the buddah if he was a God he said no. Well then they asked what are you. I am awake.
It is also an experiential religion, the main goal being Nirvana or Liberation from Suffering, unlike other religions that put off until death what Buddhism offers in this life.
While it may be important to focus on difference to further understanding of a thing, I think in this case though it may help to understand what what it has in common with other religions. The Buddah was Hindu so in order to understand Buddism you must also study Hinduism. Further, as Buddhism spread into China it encountered Taoism and from that union we have Zen.

Buddhism, is under the "inspection and arguments" about even being a religion.  That is because a religion is having a relationship with A God.  Buddhist do not have a relationship with any Gods.  This "religion" isnt special because they have nothing to believe in considering they dont believe in God.  Christians believe that if you obey the 10 Commandments and do not sin then you will die and have everlasting life in Heaven with God and his son Jesus Christ.  Buddhist believe that if you sin, then when you die you will be "reborn" into something less than your life before.  If you were a person that sinned alot you could easily be reborn as an insect.  They believe that if you lived a good life and lived by the "Four Noble Truths" then you could easily be reborn as a King, or as something greater than what you were when you die.  Having a relationship with God is what is special, not living and not having anything to believe in.  However, Buddhism has been around for a while and still is a powerful "thing" and Buddhist are pretty much able to get along with many religions because they dont believe in anything.  But to have a relationship that is strong and special, that way is to become a Christian and live for Jesus Christ.

I think religion is better definied as a system of beliefs that explain the orgin, nature, and purpose of life. Buddhism definitely fits this definition. It also includes polytheism as well as monotheism.

Hi everyone. Ya, it is not fair to not call Buddhism a religion. Despite that it is a hundred times better for humanity than Christianity or Islam, it is still a set of beliefs, to live your life by and give you 'answers'. This is the problem with all religions, groups, labels, societies etc. It is what I, and others, worry about for 'Atheism'. When something becomes predetermined it prevents individual ideas and progression. No one anywhere has all the answers to what we as individuals need to question. We have to provide both ourselves. I can start to see some of this among atheists where people adopt others ideas just because it makes them feel good. This is why I do not like labels, even atheist, but I also understand the importance of community. I wish we could all call ourselves human and speak our minds.
